The Official World Golf Ranking has been a big topic in professional golf for the past two years as LIV Golf has been trying to be included in the ranking system. The league doesn't get points yet, but the OWGR made two changes to its system. One of the changes would affect leagues like LIV and the PGA Tour.

Two months after LIV Golf’s request was denied, the people in charge announced a new way to give points for golf tournaments with fewer than 80 players. This new system would give more points to the players who finish at the top. Also, players who finish in the bottom 15 percent of events without a cut will not get points. In games where players compete against each other, those who lose their first game or lose all their games in a group won't get any points.

The changes in 2024 will affect the PGA Tour's main events, which will have around 70-80 players.  The top 50 players and anyone within 10 shots of the lead will continue playing. The other five big events — The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, and Travelers Championship — won't eliminate any players after the first rounds.

Basically, the best players in all eight events will get more points, but the bottom 12 or so players in the five events where there is no cut won't get any points.

In my opinion, the ranking points controversy shows that LIV Golf's success is not just because of money from Saudi Arabia, but also because of their sense of entitlement.

The second update gives players a new bonus for winning multiple times. If you win a second time within a year, you get a 60 percent bonus. If you win three or more times, you get a 70 percent bonus.

"We looked at the changes made in August 2022 and found two ways to make the Official World Golf Ranking better. This will help us judge how well players are doing on all the tours they can play in," explained Peter Dawson, who is the Chairman of the Official World Golf Ranking, in a statement.

The changes will start on January. January 1, 2024.
